Guru Nanak Dev Ji’ was born on 15 April 1469 at Rai Bhoi Ki Talvai, now called Nankana Sahib, near Lahore, Pakistan. He was the son of Kalyan Chand Das Bedi and Mata Tripta. His father was a patwari (accountant) for crop revenue in the village of Talwandi. Guru Nanak Dev was married to Mata Sulakkhani. Guru Nanak Dev Ji is the founder of the religion of Sikhism and is the first of the ten Sikh Gurus. He travelled to places, teaching people the message of one God who dwells in his every creation . It is part of Sikh religious belief that the spirit of Guru Nanak’s sanctity, divinity and religious authority descended upon each of the nine subsequent Gurus . Guru Nanak Dev Ji died on September 22, 1539 at the age of 70.
TEACHINGS OF SIKHISM
* Unity of God: There is but One God. He is Unborn, Infinite, Formless, All-knowing and All-pervading.
* Equality: All men are equal. God is our Mother & Father and we are His children. There is none high or low on account of birth, sex, position or riches.
* Faith: One must have perfect faith in the Guru. The word Sikhism literally means the way of the disciple.
* Love of God: We can love God only when we cease to love ourselves.
* Character-building: Guru Nanak Sahib says : “Truth is no doubt great, but greater is truthful living.”. Conquer the five deadly sins-lust, anger, greed, attachment and pride. Morality is an important step in the path of discipleship.
