In 1913, Rabindranath Tagore got the Nobel prize for literature for ‘Gitanjali’. The British Government gave him the title ‘Sir’, which he renounced in resentment to the ‘Jallianwala Bagh Massacre’.
He spreaded the cultural message of India world over and openly opposed colonialism, selfishness and narrow parochialism.
Rabindranath Tagore was a philanthropist and a natural lover. He established the Viswa Bharati University, the meeting point of world cultures. Also, setup ‘Sriniketan’- the corrective center for villages and its enhancement. His spiritual thought had the influence of Hindi literature of saintly poets. His simple poems are pervaded by Upanishadic thoughts. He was inspired from the great Hindi poet Kabir Das.
He was well aware of the contemporary philosophical, political and sociological trends of the day.
He considered helping others and serving the mankind were the real path of attaining God.
