Transforming Prisons-: by Dr. Kiran Bedi is an inspiring account of tenure as Inspector General of Tihar Prisons (1993-1995), where she revolutionized prison management and introduced transformative reforms. The book highlights, with illustrations, the deplorable conditions she inherited, including overcrowding, corruption, violence, unhygienic food, lack of medical care, and the exploitation of inmates. It vividly describes the challenges faced, such as rampant drug abuse, insensitive staff, and the neglect of women and children.The book narrates how Dr. Bedi’s reforms focused on prevention, correction, and rehabilitation, aiming to save the next victim Also she introduced initiatives like literacy programs, vocational training, spiritual practices like Vipassana meditation, and community harmony. Her initiatives focused on education, vocational training, and improving living conditions.A daycare centre was established for children, and garbage was converted into manure to improve hygiene. She also implemented a grievance-redressal system through mobile petition boxes and launched the Tihar Bakery to generate welfare funds.
Dr. Bedi’s work transformed Tihar into a global model of collective, corrective and community-based policing, proving that reformation is possible with visionary leadership and compassion. She has focused on her 4-S model. Shiksha (education), Sanskar (values), Swasthya (health) and Skills. Her legacy continues through the India Vision Foundation, which strives to create a more humane and rehabilitative prison system.

About the Author

Kiran Bedi is a Ph.D from IIT Delhi, with a postdoctoral Nehru Fellowship. She is an author, an Asian Tennis Champion, recipient of the Ramon-Magsaysay Award, and President’s Police Medal for Gallantry. She is the first woman to join the officer ranks of the Indian Police Service. She was the 24th Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry.She has founded two Foundations, Navjyoti and India Vision Foundation. Dr. Bedi’s has a biopic titled “Yes Madam Sir” made by an Australian. And her latest book “Fearless Governance” illustrates the radical ‘emendation’ of nearly 5-years.
